We’ll cover everything you need to know when choosing a pepper spray that is right for you in this video. First off: consider the formula. Will it stop the attacker? Make sure to choose a maximum strength pepper spray. Secondly: Will it help protect me if there are potentially multiple attackers? Consider the number of shots that a pepper spray has. Look for a spray that has at least ten one-second bursts or multiple shots to better allow you to escape more than one attacker. Third: What about spray patterns? Consider the formula you need. If you need it for everyday use, a pepper spray or pepper gel will suit you. Both pepper sprays and pepper gels are high-strength formulas and are naturally pigmented red so you can see where you’ve sprayed the product. If you’re a runner, or in windy conditions regularly, consider a pepper gel – this formula works just like a traditional pepper spray, but it reduces wind blowback if you use it outside, and won’t get into your AC systems indoors. Gel also allows for an even safer distance from the threat as it sprays 20% further. Fourth: Will it help keep an attacker off the streets? Look for a formula that has an ultraviolet dye. This can help identify the attacker to law enforcement so that even if you get away to safety, police can address the attacker later. A UV dye can help authorities identify a suspect for up to 48 hours. Fifth: Does it match your style & needs? Consider what attachment style (keychain, snap clip, hand strap, belt clip, etc.) is best for you. Remember – this is about you, and what will be the fastest to get to, most accessible storage, for you. And since this is meant to be carried everywhere, you want to make sure it’s a product you’d actually want to carry. Would you rather have a bright color or a more muted and discreet pepper spray? Consider what will be most comfortable for you to deploy. As you can see, there is a lot to consider when choosing a pepper spray. If you’re here to learn more about your new pepper spray or gel, you’re in the right place. At SABRE, we know that personal safety is personal, so our goal is to make sure you’re comfortable with your personal safety plan and learn how to use your new pepper spray. First off: Keep it handy. When you take your new pepper spray out of its package, make sure you find a convenient home for it. It won’t do you any good at the bottom of a purse, deep in the pocket of a backpack, or way down at the bottom of your car’s center console. Your pepper spray might have a snap clip, quick release, keychain, or belt clip – use those! Second: Get a grip. Now, let’s look at what kind of pepper spray you have. Do you have a flip top, twist top, or a twist lock model? Does your pepper spray have a finger grip or not? Get comfortable with it in your hand, and take a moment to get a good grip. You want a nice, strong grip in your dominant hand with your thumb on the trigger and your other fingers around the canister. The thumb is critical – this helps you have a steady hold and decreases any risk of it being taken from you. If you have a flip top, you’ll slide your thumb under the top of the canister and hold it out in front of you. If you have a twist lock, you’ll slide the nozzle to the ‘open and unlocked’ position. Next: Spray and away. Once you get comfortable storing and holding your pepper spray, it’s time to learn how to actually use it. Pepper sprays and pepper gels deploy extremely similarly, so these tips work for both. Hold the canister in your dominant hand, and extend that arm out in front of you. Unlock the safety mechanism, and grip with your thumb on the center of the actuator. Press down. You want to spray ear to ear, across the eyes. Aim for the nose and mouth once the eyes are affected. If you miss the first time, steady your aim, and reverse – go back across the eyes to saturate that area, and then cover the face as much as possible. Your goal is to take an attacker's vision away, and cause involuntary eye closure, difficulty breathing, facial burning, and psychological symptoms like fear, anxiety, and panic. At SABRE, we say ‘spray and away’ – once you saturate your attacker’s eyes and face with the pepper spray, it’s time to get away - that’s the most important thing. Then, call for help if needed. Last: Know what you’re working with. Make sure you know exactly what you’re working with to better ensure you have protection at a safe distance. Pepper spray is one of the best personal safety options because it allows you to better protect yourself (and your loved ones) from a safer distance. It won’t do you any good at the bottom of a drawer or buried in a closet. Your pepper spray might have a wall mount – use that. It’ll help ensure it is readily available but out of reach of children. Carefully choose a safe place that works for your home. Second: Get a grip. Take a look at how to deploy your home defense pepper spray. How does the trigger work? Get comfortable with it in your hand, and take a moment to get a good grip on your pepper spray. It's also smart to practice how you’d situate yourself in a moment of danger. You want a nice strong grip in your dominant hand with your thumb on the trigger and your other fingers holding the product. The thumb is critical – this helps you have a steady hold and increase your accuracy and aim. If you’re holding a larger unit, you may want to use a second hand to help steady your aim. Third: Spray and away. Hold the canister in your dominant hand, and extend that arm out in front of you. You want to spray ear to ear, across the eyes. First off: Keep it handy. When you take your new stun gun out of its package, make sure you find a convenient home for it. It won’t do you any good at the bottom of a drawer, deep in a pocket of a backpack, or way down at the bottom of your car’s center console. All SABRE Stun Guns come with a holster, wrist strap, or other carrying accessory, so your product will be ready when you need it the most. Make sure to keep your stun gun in a convenient place so that you can reach it at a moment's notice. Second: Get a grip. It’s smart to practice removing your stun gun regularly from the holster or purse so that you’re familiar with how you’d situate yourself and are better prepared in a moment of danger. Take a look at your stun gun. Know that the shock probes discharge the electric shock. We recommend a test fire from a ½ to one second burst; that should be all you need to ensure the product functions. Use caution with this test fire because anything longer than a full second burst could potentially damage the product or void your warranty. Depending on the model, you can also activate the flashlight with a switch or a button. Next: Charge it up. For battery operated models, insert the correct batteries and make sure to read the provided product instructions about battery replacement, as these can vary. With rechargeable models, you can maximize battery life by starting with an initial 12-hour charge, and then charge it weekly for a minimum of 4 to 5 hours. Now: Shock and away. Once you get comfortable storing, charging, and holding your stun gun, it’s time to learn how to use it. Now, identify where your safety or ‘on/off’ switch is. Depending on the model, you can activate the flashlight using either the switch or a button. Note that the ‘on’ mode will not activate your stun gun; to activate it, you'll need to press the discharge button to activate the shock. For the stun gun to be effective, make direct contact with the attacker’s body. Discharge the stun gun into the aggressor's upper hip, shoulder, or below the rib cage to provide maximum impact. A full five-second discharge can cause disorientation, loss of balance, and more. Please note that, unlike pepper spray, an attacker can recover from a stun gun shock in just a few seconds. So, once you have stopped the attacker or can escape, do so immediately and call for help. Be safe, go confidently, and trust your instincts – they’re usually right.
